My wife and I helped start churches in Australia, Fiji, China, and New Zealand. We found that many of the churches were struggling. One of my main conclusions (rather than blaming myself) was that the churches that were doing well were because of the leader, and the churches that were struggling were (surprise, surprise) because of the leader.

Over time, church began to feel artificial to me. The people were genuine, but everything seemed scripted, like a performance. More importantly, what I saw in modern churches was far removed from what we read about in the Bible. The gap was striking.

Jesus didn't leave His disciples instructions on what to do with all the people. He simply told them to serve others, just as He had done. This raises questions: Was this an oversight, or an intentional aspect of His plan? There was no complex hierarchy or organizational structure. Yet today's churches have created elaborate systems, as if Jesus needed help with growth strategies and leadership development. This shift is puzzling and concerning.

The word "church" itself is intriguing. We all have an immediate reaction to it, good or bad. But have you ever wondered why we only use it for religious gatherings in buildings? How did it come to mean this, and where did it come from? Why does it not bear any resemblance to the word it replaces in the Bible?

The truth about the real meaning of "church" is both shocking and enlightening. Its original concept has been hidden and twisted over time. People have even lost their lives for questioning the established view. Uncovering the authentic meaning of "church" reveals a stark contrast to what we commonly think today. This discovery could change how you see faith communities forever.

Jewish Views on Baptism at the Time of the New Testament

The concept of baptism, as understood in the Christian tradition, has its roots in Jewish practices and beliefs during the Second Temple period. To fully grasp the Jewish perspective on baptism at the time of the New Testament, it's crucial to explore the various forms of ritual immersion that were prevalent in Judaism during this era.

1. Mikveh: Ritual Purification

The most common form of ritual immersion in Judaism was (and still is) the use of a mikveh, a ritual bath used for purification.

"And when the unclean person touches any such thing, he shall be unclean until evening and shall bathe himself in water."

- Leviticus 15:7

Mikvehs were used for various purposes, including:

Purification after contact with a corpse

Purification for women after menstruation or childbirth

Conversion to Judaism

Preparation for Yom Kippur

2. Proselyte Baptism

By the time of the New Testament, Judaism had developed a practice of "proselyte baptism" for Gentiles converting to Judaism. This one-time immersion was seen as a symbolic rebirth and cleansing from previous pagan associations.

3. John the Baptist's Baptism

The baptism practiced by John the Baptist was unique and controversial in its time. While it drew from Jewish purification rituals, it differed in significant ways:

It was a one-time event, not repeated

It was explicitly connected to repentance and forgiveness of sins

It was seen as preparation for the coming Messiah

"John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins."

- Mark 1:4

4. Qumran Community Practices

The Dead Sea Scrolls reveal that the Qumran community, likely associated with the Essenes, practiced regular ritual immersions as part of their daily spiritual discipline. This practice was more frequent and held deeper spiritual significance than typical Jewish purification rituals.

5. Baptism as Metaphor

In rabbinic literature, we find references to "baptism of fire" or passage through water as metaphors for spiritual transformation or trials. This metaphorical use might have influenced early Christian understanding of baptism.

Conclusion

While the Christian sacrament of baptism as developed in the early church was distinct from Jewish practices, it clearly grew out of this rich context of Jewish ritual immersions and purifications. The Jewish views on baptism at the time of the New Testament were diverse, ranging from routine ritual purification to more spiritualized practices in certain sects.

Many Christians assume Jesus tithed, but this common belief might surprise you. As an observant Jew living under Mosaic Law, Jesus actually didn't tithe as we understand it today. The Law prescribed specific tithing requirements for landowners and farmers, which didn't apply to Jesus's situation as a craftsman.

On the other hand, Paul, once a strict Pharisee, initially burdened himself and his followers with numerous extra-biblical laws to demonstrate their righteousness. However, after his dramatic conversion to Christianity, Paul abandoned this legalistic approach, including the practice of tithing.

But how can we be certain about these claims? The answer lies within the Bible itself. Scripture clearly outlines who was required to tithe under Mosaic Law and under what circumstances. This raises important questions for modern believers:

Are you adhering to laws that don't actually apply to you?

What are the spiritual and practical consequences of following or disregarding these laws?

Is it even possible to keep all the laws?

This book delves deep into the biblical text, examining the historical context of tithing, its use throughout Scripture, and its relevance for contemporary Christians. We'll explore how Jesus's teachings on generosity and stewardship differ from the Old Testament tithing system, and how Paul's letters reshape our understanding of giving in the New Covenant.

By understanding the true biblical perspective on tithing, readers will gain fresh insights into God's heart for generosity, the freedom we have in Christ, and how to approach financial stewardship in a way that honors God without falling into legalism.

Whether you're a pastor, a long-time tither, or someone questioning church financial practices, this book will challenge your assumptions and equip you with a solid biblical foundation for generous living in the 21st century.

In our modern Christian culture, it's easy to conflate the church institution with God Himself. We often hear phrases like "give to God" or "serve God" when what's really being asked is to give to or serve a church organization. While this might seem obvious to some, it's a distinction that's frequently overlooked and misunderstood.

First and foremost, we need to redefine what we mean by "church." The church institution is a building or an organization. It is NOT the people of God on assignment. The New Testament portrays the body of Christ as a living, breathing community of believers, with Jesus Christ as its sole head. This perspective shift is vital in understanding our relationship with God and our role within the body.

It's important to note that there's no New Testament commandment to give to a church organization. While generosity and stewardship are certainly biblical principles, the modern concept of "giving to God" by financially supporting a church institution isn't outlined in scripture.

Perhaps most controversially, we need to reconsider what it means to "serve God." Many activities we associate with serving God are actually just helping a church organization function. Parking cars on Sunday, looking after children during services, playing music, or greeting newcomers - while all valuable contributions - don't inherently equate to serving God. These actions help a church organization operate smoothly, but they're not synonymous with divine service.

This isn't to say these activities are wrong or unimportant. They can be valuable and may indeed be what God calls some individuals to do. However, it's crucial to recognize that participating in church activities doesn't translate to serving God. Our service to God is much broader and more encompassing than our involvement in church programs.

While church organizations play a significant role in many Christians' lives, it's essential to remember that it doesn't equal God. Our faith, our service, and our relationship with God extend far beyond any organization or institution. By keeping this in mind, we can cultivate a more genuine, expansive understanding of what it truly means to follow Christ and serve God in our daily lives.
